Reiki
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a spiritual practice and an age old healing art. Translated from Japanese, the actual word “Reiki” means “Universal life-force energy”. Dr Mikao Usui, who founded the system in Japan at the end of the nineteenth century, rediscovered a way to connect with this energy and use it to heal ourselves and others. Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. He spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in this oral tradition passed down from Master to student.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn, use or receive Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on any belief system and will work whether you believe in it or not. We all have the ability to connect with the energy of Reiki and to use it and throughout the years it has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.
Reiki is quick and simple to learn and even easier to use. The ability to use Reiki is transferred to the student by a Reiki Master, through a process of four “initiations” or “attunements” which open the student to the energy of Reiki. The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is also a very simple process. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. A typical Reiki treatment usually takes 1 to 2 hours.
Reiki works in a holistic, all encompassing manner. It gently enters deep inside and heals us from the core while opening energetic blockages. Reiki heals the person on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels and while chronic illness may take a while to heal, acute injuries can be healed extremely rapidly. Reiki supports the person in day to day living, improves their general health on physical, mental and spiritual levels and serves as a preventative medicine that protects us from illness. Thus, Reiki functions both as a preventative and as a curative medicine.
Reiki can be given anywhere and at any time, as no special equipment or state of mind is required to give or receive it, and neither the recipient or giver of Reiki has to use any effort of will or concentration during this process. Reiki energy naturally flows to the areas of need, supporting and accelerating the body’s natural ability to heal itself, and restores balance in one’s life. Reiki never clashes with other forms of treatment, either. Rather, it supports both orthodox and complementary treatment of any sort. Reiki can never cause harm and is never depleted. That is because as Reiki practitioners, we are not storing the energy within us, but simply channeling it through us.
