Feng Shui

What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of harnessing our environment to bring health, wealth and good fortune into our lives. Through it we may come to understand the relationship between people and places and the effect living and working environments have on our well-being.

Feng-shui is not a superstition or a set of dos and don'ts. It is the art and science of understanding the forces of nature in order to design houses and workplaces that blend with the environment instead of clashing with it. It aims to help us live in harmony with the world by promoting the flow of positive energy and neutralizing or avoiding negative or destructive energy.

At the base of this philosophy lies the premise that our homes are direct extensions of ourselves. The art of Feng Shui centers on making a conscious connection between our environment and the inner self. This includes understanding that our homes and workspaces not only mirror who we are but also, in turn, shape and affect us.

Feng Shui helps 'decode' the inner world as it is expressed in our exterior spaces within the design choices and symbolism we use. Through this philosophy we are able to recognise negative aspects of our lives expressed in our environment and alter them.

Making changes in our exterior space has the effect of clearing the blockages in our lives, which affect our health, wealth and happiness. Thus, changing our exterior space facilitates a positive shift in our inner world, bringing us back to balance and harmony. Through this art we can maximize the potential of our homes and lives, enabling us to place ourselves in our environment to our best advantage.

Round faceted cut-glass Feng Shui crystals
Round faceted cut-glass crystals are used in the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui to stabilize, enhance and balance the flow of Chi (energy) in an environment. One of the most effective ways of introducing light and enlivening a room with Yang energy is by placing cut glass crystals near windows. By catching the sunlight, breaking it, and dispersing it throughout the room in the form of rainbows, crystals help to stimulate and uplift Chi. Rainbows are not only effective in inspiring and uplifting people’s Chi, but are also a great way to bring all the elemental colors into a room.

Other recommended locations for hanging crystals are in specific corners of the house where we wish to maintain balanced Chi (such as relationship, wealth or health corners), and over toilets, where crystals are used to disperse negative energy that may enter the house through the sewage system.

The colors
Surrounding ourselves with a variety of colors balances the overall Chi in our environments and we can stimulate positive change and vitality by purposefully applying colors to our homes and offices. In Feng Shui, colors are primarily used to represent the five elements and the nine areas in the Bagua Map (such as the wealth corner, relationship corner, etc).

Here are a few examples of the meanings and applications of colors in Feng Shui:
  • Health & Family corner – Wood element – Blues/Greens
  • Love & Relationship corner – Fire element – Reds/Pinks/white
  • Wealth & Prosperity corner – Wood element – Blues/Reds/Purples/Gold

However, it is important that your choice of crystal and color is determined firstly by your own intuition and personal taste. Choose the colors that you like, or the colors you feel are missing in the area of the house you plan to place the crystal.

The symbols
Virtually everything in our environment can assume symbolic significance: natural objects (like stones, plants, animals, etc..) or man-made things. Most symbols hold different meanings in different cultures, but some may hold surprisingly similar meanings and connotations across different cultures and societies. The fish, for example, symbolizes prosperity and wealth in many different cultures. In fact, in Chinese the actual word “fish” also means “surplus”. The symbols hanging on the crystals (fish, birds, hands and pomegranates) are all significant, representing prosperity, freedom and protection. These symbols are effective in all Bagua areas of the house. A fish in a wealth corner, for example, will amplify prosperity, while a fish in a relationship corner would enrich an existing relationship or attract relationship into one’s life. The different symbols have the capability to create and enhance whatever is lacking in one’s life or home.
